MLB Roundtable: Which team will be next to face a prolonged drought at the World Championships?

MLB season abbreviated 2020 has completed, and the Los Angeles Dodgers are World Champions. They beat the Tampa Bay Rise in six matches to claim their first title since 1988. Now that the holiday season has started, here are the important dates you need to know for the winter.

For the duration of the vacation, I and fellow clerks from CBS Sports MLB will be giving you a weekly roundtable that breaks up with, well, almost anything. The latest news, historical question, thoughts on the future of baseball, all sorts of things. Last week we looked at potential Francisco Lindor landing sites. This week, we’ll be discussing the teams looking to end long World Championship dry spells.

Which team will be next to end a long streak of droughts at the World Championships?

RJ Anderson: The Padres and the Mets will be popular reactions. I’m going to mix things up for the plot by going with the Reds. It’s been 30 years since they won the championship, but they have a good roster and I think they will do what they can this winter to ensure the next qualifying period is a little longer. With the Cubs and Brewers seemingly on their way down and Pirates already at the bottom, Cincy should have a chance to run the division in the next few years, giving them ample opportunity to achieve a legitimate title.

Catherine Aquavilla: I’m going with Padres. From the start, that may seem like a premature choice given that the club reached the qualifiers in 2020 for the first time in 14 years. But the San Diego quintessence – made up of Fernando Tatis Jr., Mani Machado, Eric Hosmer, and Will Myers – is not only talented, but they’re a designer too. In addition to their impressive farming system, they are set to compete for several years to come. With Mike Cliffinger ready to pitch alongside Denelson Lammett and Chris Badak in 2022, that gives a solid 1-2-3 rotation, and that doesn’t even include the best potential candidates Mackenzie Gore or Louis Patino. The Padres team has the basis for a winning formula, and San Diego will continue to close their World Championship title to break a drought every year.

Matt Snyder: I’ll go with the Mets. There is a decent enough foundation, and now with Steve Cohen looking to make a huge push in the middle of a period when nearly every other team has been penning their pennies, they are perfectly positioned to take advantage of unique circumstances. Maybe they’d do something like signing JT Realmuto, George Springer and Trevor Bauer or something like that, but I think they’ll keep making a noise after this season. They will soon be a force.

Dainberry: I have to say Padres, too. They have an impressive young talent base and a daring front desk, have shown willingness to spend on seasoned mad agents, and are an attractive destination for free agents. Sharing a division with the Dodgers team isn’t optimal, but the Qualifiers will likely expand permanently at Padres’ number to get a lot of cracks and hikes over the next several years.

MIKE AXISA: Mets or Padres would probably be the right answer, so for diversity, I’m going with athletics. They haven’t won the World Championship since 1989, the year the Loma Prieta earthquake shook Game 3, but the tournament window is currently wide open. They’ve had the fourth-most wins in baseball over the past two seasons, have two stars on the field (Matt Chapman and Matt Olson), and they always seem to spot a high-quality bet (Chris Bassett!). Team A should discover the midfield this winter, but AL West can now win it as Astros head down. Just get into the post-season phase and you can win the world championship, and I think athletics has a clearer way beyond the season than Mets (a very tough division) and Padres (stuck in the same division as the Dodgers) in the short term.
