Yvonne Adams Powell thought someone had returned to her garage Saturday night when she heard a loud “boom” outside her home near the football field.

I looked up and saw a ceiling fan flickering and wondered if this was an earthquake.

“probably!” Said Mike Carroll who heard and felt the explosion from his home on the north side of Lake Marion County.

He said the sharp explosion reminded him of a voice familiar from a long time ago.

He said, “Just as they used to blow up a quarry near Florence.” “We can feel these in the city.”

The slight earthquake, which measured 2.4 on the Richter scale and had an epicenter about 3 miles below the surface, was the second earthquake to hit the area in a week. A smaller event, only 2 on the Richter scale, on November 16.

“It’s on an alarming level, and it’s not harmful,” said Rick Miller, chief scientist at the Kansas Geological Survey.

Earthquakes occurred in the same location in recent years, an area known as Rif ‘Naama, which extends along the eastern part of the governorate.

He said that scientists are monitoring the area.

He said that smaller, superficial earthquakes like Saturday can produce thunder-like noise that occurs when the Earth vibrates at a certain frequency.

“Our ear can hear very low-frequency earthquakes,” he said. “We have a range high enough to hear them with our ears.”

Dogs have better hearing than humans and can hear vibrations deep beneath the surface, which gives some truth to the popular wisdom that dogs hear an earthquake before it strikes.

He said, “It seems they are hearing, in advance, what we cannot hear.”

There has been talk in recent years that some earthquakes in south-central Kansas are partly due to the greater volume of sewage pumped into the ground.

“Scientists have noticed a clear rise in earthquakes with increased fluid,” he said, adding that the Marion earthquakes may not have been linked to the disposal of brine.

He said earthquakes are not something that will put scientists on alert.

The county could feel a “couple of POPs” on a scale of 2.5 and 2.6 on the Richter scale in the coming months – none of them are harmful.

“But we are always surprised by Mother Nature,” he said. “This is the hardest thing to expect, but there is no monster in sight in the background.”
