Ethiopia attacks Tigray regional capital – BBC News
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has said he is embarking on a “final phase” of the army operation in the northern Tigray region after weeks of fighting. He said the military will try not to harm civilians in the regional capital of Mekelle (a city of 500,000 inhabitants), and asked residents to stay home. He has promised that the TPLF party that controls Mekelle will continue to fight. The UN has warned that war could be a crime if the Ethiopian army attacks Mekelle. Abiy’s announcement came on Wednesday after the deadline for Tigray fighters to surrender. Hundreds of people have been reported dead and thousands forced out of their homes as Ethiopian forces have kidnapped several Tigray villages from the TPLF. However, the details of the fight are difficult to confirm, as all telephone, mobile and internet communications with the Tigray region have been cut off. Please subscribe HERE .
