Natural hazards workshops to provide insight into landscapes from sea to sky

Sessions will take place on 2 and 3 December to provide expert information and local discussion

Veronica Woodruff doesn’t want to cause you any more anxiety.

But she decided to go ahead by hosting a virtual community interaction session called The Impact of Cascading Natural Disasters on Sea-to-Sky Communities because it’s great for locals to learn about the wild landscapes around them and it’s important to be prepared.

A Pemberton resident first began studying the natural hazards at sea to the sky before the COVID-19 pandemic uprooted everyone’s lives.

“People don’t think about this day in and day out, but the fictional nature of a massive earthquake or a volcano [eruption] “Well, I’m going to save that out and take note,” Woodruff said. “The topic is attractive and the implications are widespread.”

While Woodruff may be known locally for her work with Stewardship Pemberton, she has recently sharpened her interest in the natural world and decided to focus on the landscape.

This shaped her consulting work and propelled her to her master’s degree at Royal Roads University, where she is now studying the subject.

“I realized that all this wonderful research was happening on the ground, so I reached out to the researchers and they were doing all this interesting work. Then looking at emergency preparedness from a local government perspective, they are doing a lot of work,” Woodruff said.

Upcoming workshops will take place on December 2 from 12:30 to 3:30 pm for Sea to Sky North (areas such as Pemberton, Lil’wat Nation, and SLRD Area C) and on December 3 from 9 AM to 12 PM for Sea to Sky South. (Whistler, Squamish, SLRD Area D).

“They are the same look, the same speakers, and the hazard events are basically the same for all the communities in Sea to Sky,” Woodruff said. “The reason I’m dividing them is because I want to have a community dialogue. We have presentations from experts that I really look forward to. Then it’s an opportunity for community dialogue.”

Expert presenters include local emergency managers, as well as Glenn Williams Jones, Associate Director of the Natural Hazards Research Center at Simon Fraser University, and Steve Cowan, a volcanologist from Quest University.

“Glenn, through the Natural Hazards Research Center, has a number of graduate students crawling up the foothills here [conducting] Monitoring software [like the] “Total instability on Mt. Migre,” Woodruff said. “The technology that they’re using is an emerging technology to allow real-time monitoring and it’s not extraordinarily expensive. They’re experimenting with it in a number of locations – Mount Curie, Garibaldi. He’ll talk about that in terms of innovations now about research and risk monitoring.”

Meanwhile, Quinn will talk about Whistler’s geopark project.

“It’s really an exciting initiative,” Woodruff added. “What an excellent way to present the risks of natural hazards in an attractive way; look at this amazing landscape and the way it has evolved.”

For its part, Woodruff launched a survey of Sea to Sky locals to share more about their knowledge of natural disaster risks – from wildfires to earthquakes, landslides, floods and more – their preparedness and insight into how emergency situations such as evacuation are handled.

“Until now, people are taking the time to write the comments, which will all be part of the data analysis,” she said. “I really appreciate the level of information people have provided. I am very happy with the level of interest from society, government and individual communities as well.”

While at first, only a few workshops were recorded, it was not until Woodruff recorded completed surveys that she realized that about 170 people had registered for the workshops at the end of the survey.

Because they plan to create smaller discussion groups, Woodruff said they are still able to accommodate more participants.

She said, “Some people email, ‘I’d like to share, but I’m just a resident.’ These are the people I really want to deal with. To make it effective, contingency planning must include the people who will be affected.
