The countdown to 2030 launches an expanded 2020 country profile on early childhood development

Early childhood is considered to be the most important developmental stage throughout life. What happens to a child in the first few years of life is crucial to a child’s path of development and life course that affects his or her mental and physical health, education, and future economic participation.

To track global progress in early childhood development (ECD), WHO, UNICEF and partners today launched a new expanded ECD for 2020. Countdown to 2030 country profiles. The updated profiles cover 42 ECD indicators and 197 countries, including 60 high-income countries, covering 99.8% of the world’s children under 5 years of age.

Profiles for 2020 reveal significant threats to the youngest residents of the world:

  • In most countries, less than half of infants under 6 months of age are exclusively breastfed
  • At least 25% of children under the age of 5 lag behind in development in approximately one third of countries
  • Less than half of young children in a third of countries receive the benefits of early stimulation and prompt adult care in their home
  • More than three-quarters of children aged 1 to 4 experience violent discipline by their carers in almost half of the countries.

The Countdown to 2030 country profiles on the ECD are an important step in establishing a global monitoring and accountability system for early childhood development and encourage further advocacy and action to improve ECD. However, data on a number of critical areas remain a challenge.

Among countries with available data on ECD indicators, less than half have data on key indicators, such as child poverty, or whether a young child is a minimum eligible child or attends early education. Rights-based advocacy has helped increase the availability of data on the duration of paid maternity leave and birth registration to more than 90% in countries included in country profiles, but few have data on important indicators such as early education or home stimulation.

Under the constraints of the COVID-19 pandemic, many families have become the only providers of care needed for the development of young children. Although much is known about the impact of the pandemic on children’s development, ECD data collected before the pandemic will provide countries with useful baseline values for assessing the potential effects of health and social disorders on young children and their families in the years to come.

Today, urgent action and investment in ECD by governments and national and international organizations is needed, as well as a global definition of responsible care that can be standardized and compared in different cultures and contexts.

WHO, UNICEF, the World Bank, and multidisciplinary experts are making progress in defining rapid care measures and working to strengthen children’s health, learning, nutrition, and family environment issues in standardized household surveys.
