The Australian Embassy in Greece is responding to the needs of the earthquake-affected population of Samos

On the morning of October 30, an earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale shook the eastern Mediterranean with a devastating impact on the Greek island of Samos.

The earthquake left some 300 buildings uninhabitable or temporarily unsafe and also caused a tsunami that flooded the harbor area, tragically killing two teenagers.

Immediately after the disaster, there was a wave of solidarity and support from the people, neighboring countries, and international organizations.

In this spirit, the Australian Embassy in Greece and the Western Municipality of Samos combined cleaning products that were sent to support the earthquake-affected population.

“With this contribution, the Australian Embassy wishes to support the municipality’s ongoing efforts to provide shelter for people who were displaced by the devastating earthquake that struck the island in late October,” the embassy said.

An endless nightmare for Samos: “There are still people who are homeless due to the earthquake, and some live in tents.”

About 450 people are still homeless, says George Kyriazes, head of the Samos Chamber.

“Some people still live in tents,” he said.

“About 260 people stay in hotels, while others have settled with relatives and friends,” the mayor of eastern Samos, George Stantzos, told Sputnik Hellas.

At the same time, more than 1,300 homes were declared unsuitable.
