Chia Salinas signs new deal with San Jose Earthquakes

Chia Salinas has said he will keep his options open after his contract with San Jose Earthquakes expires upon his arrival out of the season, but that he ultimately wants at least one round with the crew, as the club announced on Thursday that they had signed a veteran for a new one-year contract with an option to extend.

“San Jose has benefited from its strong veteran presence in the locker room, including Chia Salinas,” Jesse Fioranelli, General Manager of Earthquakes, said in a statement to the team. “These players represent much more than their contributions on the field. We are excited to build on the qualities of Shea and her leadership as they have influenced our performance as well as our commitment to pushing ourselves to the fullest for the team as well as for our fans.”

The 34-year-old has played the last nine seasons with Earthquakes and 11 out of 13 in MLS, and has made 292 games so far for the club. Salinas broke the club’s nursing record in the 2020 season, with 48 games ever, and is second in all matches, behind only Chris Wondolovsky.

As Salinas gets older, he has always been incredibly solid in his career, versatile in terms of his position, and has the remarkable knack of being effective as both a base and a substitute player. In fact, he was named “Super Sub of the Year” by MLS podcast Extratime for the 2020 season, playing 26 matches in all competitions and knocking out the bench for 21 of them.

All in all, this is a good movement from earthquakes. Salinas may never be a superstar, but he brings much more than what people outside of San Jose realize, and his level of persistence and skill at scoring goals at the right time remains valuable to earthquakes. Besides re-signing Quakes to another versatile player this week, Tommy Thompson, I think the club is building the squad and that will give them a good base for the promotions hoped elsewhere on the list this off-season.
