A man “jumped out of the window and caught fire” in an “earthquake” explosion was heard miles away

Terrified neighbors described the horrific moment in which they saw a person jump out of a window and “caught fire” when an explosion near their home seriously injured two people.

Residents in Illingworth, West Yorkshire, said they believed there was an “earthquake” near their home when a house collapsed after an explosion that could be heard three miles away.

Police said a woman was taken to hospital with severe burns, and a man was seriously injured. Another woman was slightly injured in the accident.

Candice Nevison, a local and mother of two, 37, said she believed her home had collapsed due to the loudness of the explosion on Green Lane.

She described how a person jumped out of their window and “caught fire” following the explosion at around 7:45 pm on Saturday.

Nevison, whose mother was among those safely evacuated, said another person escaped from the burning building.

“It looked like there was a huge bang and I felt like something had fallen on my head,” she said.

“The effect was so severe that I thought my house was collapsing.

“I was terrified because the sound was so loud and my mom was right on that street.

“I looked outside and there was a wildfire.

“Thank God my mother was evacuated as one of the six houses and she is fine.”

She added, “I saw people running outside the house around 7:45 am.

“I saw someone jump out the window while someone else carried an old lady on her shoulder.

“You just don’t expect anything like this to happen.

I’ve never seen or heard anything like this before.

Another neighbor described the massive explosion as “surreal”.

He was told that three people at the property had been taken to hospital with burns.

Colin Stone, 56, said, “I just got out because I thought my house had exploded.

“The whole street thought it – it was just surreal.

“The firefighters told us that they were taken to hospital with burns, and I hope they are fine.”

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Services director Benji Bush said they are not ruling out the possibility that the gas leak may have caused the explosion.

But he said that it was too early to specify and that efforts were focused on securing the area after “massive and substantial damage” from the explosion and the subsequent fire.

More than 30 firefighters attended the scene, as well as four fire engines, support teams and specialists.

Mr. Bush said that an elderly woman and two others who were in the house were being looked after by a neighbor after they fled the collapsed building upon their arrival.

The extent of their injuries remains unknown, but they are currently recovering in hospital.

Bush added: “We do not yet know the cause of the fire.

“We were called in with reports of an explosion and sent four fire engines, which is our usual protocol.

“There was a lot of damage to the building when we arrived.”

West Yorkshire Police Chief Sarah Baker said: “The cause of the fire is currently under investigation and efforts are underway to make the area safe and support the affected population.”
