An earthquake of magnitude 5.4 hits Cairo

The head of the National Institute for Astronomy and Geophysics Research (NRIAG), Mohamed El-Kady, announced, Saturday, that the Egyptian National Seismological Network (ENSN) recorded an earthquake in the eastern Mediterranean with a magnitude of 5.4 on the Richter scale.

The judge said in a statement that “some citizens felt the earthquake in the cities of Cairo and the Nile Delta, due to its depth, which reached 80 kilometers.”

Previously, an earthquake of the same magnitude struck Egypt in May.

A statement issued by the institute stated that the main 10-kilometer-long earthquake struck at 1:21 a.m. Cairo time, and extends 345 kilometers from Marsa Matruh to the Crete Islands in Greece.

She added that an aftershock measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale was detected at 2:02 am, 31 km and 340 km north of Matrouh.

The institute confirmed that no damages were recorded as a result.

A sudden earthquake hit Birkat Al-Sabaa Al-Masrya in Menoufia Governorate in December 2019, causing panic among the city’s residents and leading to large cracks in one of the main bridges in the area.

The National Network of Seismology to Monitor the Earthquakes stated that a 3.7-magnitude earthquake struck North Sinai in July of last year at 10:35 a.m. No injuries were reported.

July 2019 saw three more earthquakes striking Egypt, according to the head of the National Seismological Network in Egypt, Gad Mohamed El-Kady, who stated that a 2.7-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Cairo on July 12 without any injuries reported, while another earthquake of 1.8 magnitude struck Eastern Region.
