USGS notes earthquake increase in Mauna Loa activity update

Earthquake activity increased on the northwest flank of Mauna Loa on December 4, 2020, including a magnitude 4.1 earthquake and combinations of small, shallow earthquakes occurring closely in time and place. USGS HVO says GPS measurements continue to show “slow and long-term enlargement at the summit, consistent with magma supply to the volcano’s shallow storage system”, and gas concentrations and fumarole temperatures at both the summit and the sulfur cone in the southwest rift region remain stable. .
