Cuban medical brigades fight the epidemic – workers world
Socialist Cuba embodies the spirit of international solidarity through its constant medical assistance to countries around the world, especially those affected by imperialism. This is not just an empty phrase. The true meaning of solidarity is being shown every day by teams of Cuban healthcare workers – doctors and nurses who have brought their skills and dedication to other Caribbean countries, Latin America, Africa, the Middle East and even Europe.

When governments ask for help in medical emergencies, this socialist country and its healthcare professionals are keen to provide it. Cuba has responded quickly in fighting disease or post-disaster assistance, whenever medical assistance is needed.
This remains true during the COVID pandemic. Since Cuban researchers have developed advanced treatments and drugs to deal with the disease, Cubans are happy to share them and send medical teams to help.
The island nation sent 53 brigades of health workers from the Henry Reeve International Medical Corps to more than 40 countries during the global pandemic emergency, in addition to Cubans already working in 58 countries. (Granma, November 23) Cuban leader Fidel Castro established the Henry Reeve Brigades in 2005 to help victims of Hurricane Katrina in the United States, but Washington refused to help Cuba.
Solidarity with Haiti
A milestone has been reached especially worthy of support from Cuba and Haiti. In December this year, the Cuban Medical Corps marks 22 years of providing assistance to Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and among the poorest countries in the world.
In 1998, when Hurricane George devastated Haiti, Cuba stepped in and provided medical and other aid. Cubans agreed to keep doctors in Haiti, as long as necessary, and to train Haitian doctors who would return home and care for their communities.
At the time, Haiti’s healthcare system was poor, and the average life expectancy was 54 years. The ravages of colonialism and US and European imperialism have left the public healthcare system virtually non-existent.
With Cuban help, improvements were made in public health as well as in literacy. Cubans especially helped the poorest and most remote communities with treatment, medicine and health education.
When a devastating earthquake struck Haiti in 2010, 344 Cuban health workers were already working there. Henry Reeve’s brigade dispatched 350 more medical professionals. For the first 72 hours, Cubans were the ones providing emergency health care after the earthquake, operating and treating the wounded, and working side by side with their Haitian comrades, before help arrived from other countries.
Welcome to “Cuban Friends”
Last spring, after reporting COVID-19 cases for the first time in Haiti, Cuban doctors already stationed in Haiti stayed and prepared to return home to assist a newly arrived delegation of 348 health workers. Haitian Minister of Health Mary Greta Roy Clement welcomed the “Cuban Friends”, recalling their decisive assistance after the 2010 earthquake, during the cholera epidemic brought by the United Nations “peacekeepers” in October of that year, and after the deadly Hurricane Matthew in 2016. (Scientist) Workers, April 15)
Luis Oliviero, the coordinator of the Henri Reeve Brigade, said Cuban teams “focused our efforts on fighting the epidemic.” Even when case numbers are high, “disease progression is not chaotic, thanks to the support of our brigade.” (Telesur English, December 4)
A special unit of Cuban health professionals supported Haitian doctors in containing the spread of the virus. Since the emergence of COVID-19, Cubans have treated the most dangerous diseases. “This is because the Haitian people trust us so much,” said Elizabeth Segura, deputy coordinator of the Henry Reeve Brigade.
Dozens of peace, justice, medicine and solidarity organizations have called for the Henry Reeve International Medical Brigade to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for its great contributions to the peoples of the world during the current pandemic.
