Celebrities to be removed from the torch relay in Tokyo 2020 due to crowd concerns

The Japanese government is said to be considering excluding celebrities from the Olympic torch relay in Tokyo 2020 when it begins its journey in Fukushima on March 25 next year.

Kyodo News reported that measures could be implemented to try to reduce congestion on the side of the road in order to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus.

Participants with athletic and Olympic links are expected to continue.

The majority of torch bearers had been allocated holes before announcing the Games would be postponed in March and organizers pledged to ensure they would be allowed to wade in 2021 where possible.

“It is not possible to think of rearranging the participants in the relay,” an unnamed local official told the news agency.

They added, “Plus I don’t know where to put an end to who is a celebrity.”

There may be restrictions on the convoy of vehicles usually preceding the torch runner.

In previous years, representatives of shepherds participated alongside trucks and distributed flags, posters and other souvenirs to roadside spectators.

Back in March, the presence of Hollywood movie star Gerard Butler as torchbearer in Sparta forced the organizers to scale back the relay after “unexpectedly large crowds” appeared.

Butler starred as the heroic Spartan king Leonidas in the movie 300 and the municipality invited him as part of events marking the 2,500th anniversary of the Battle of Thermopylae.

The handover ceremony in Athens last March was inferior and few officials attended.

When the torch reached Japan, there were large crowds when it was displayed in a safety lamp at the Sendai Railway Station in Miyagi Prefecture, an area severely affected by the earthquake and tsunami in 2011.

Non-sporting celebrities have been a regular part of the torch relay since 1988 when Jang Yeon Jeong, then Miss Korea, carried the torch on its way to the Seoul Games.

In 2000, singer Olivia Newton John carried the torch in the shade of the Sydney Harbor Bridge on the eve of the Games.

The late Christopher Reeve, star of Superman films, was among the torchbearers in Salt Lake City in 2002.

Angelina Jolie was due to carry the Athena torch 2004 but was forced to withdraw after a run-in to shooting schedules.

Movie star Jackie Chan lit a cauldron in Sanya early on his trip to Beijing in 2008 and famous film director Zhang Yimou was among the other film’s holders.

In London 2012, veteran artist Sir Bruce Forsyth exchanged Flame at the same place where the Olympic marathon ended in 1908, but the organizers came under widespread criticism when the reality TV singing duo Jedward and American rapper will.i.am were also allowed to run.

During the latest torch relay of the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Games, a number of contestants were selected from K-Pop teams.

Among them is Takuya, the Japanese singer in boyband Cross Gene.

Tokyo 2020 organizers are expected to announce more details about the torch relay this week.

On the other hand, Flame, which has been on fire since March, continues to tour 14 counties displayed in a safety lamp.
