The KCC says the Wichita earthquakes are not related to oil and gas activity

Wichita, Kansas (KSNW) – The Kansas Foundation Committee (KCC) says recent earthquakes in the Wichita region are not related to the oil and gas industry.

The KCC regulates oil and gas production and exploration in Kansas. And it has achieved after more than a dozen recent earthquakes in South Central Kansas.

“Based on our investigation, KCC staff do not believe that the seismic activity in Wichita, Kansas is related to any oil and gas activities in the area,” said Ryan Hoffman, Director of Conservation at KCC, in a press release.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) says eight of those earthquakes were of magnitude 2.5 or higher. Just this morning, there was a magnitude 2.1 earthquake with its epicenter near Central and Greenwich in Wichita.

The KCC says its investigation examined many factors including:

Review historical disposal well records for Arbuckle or Granite Wash injection wells within a six-mile radius of earthquakes. There were five wells in the radius. No recent increases in volume were found, and any new drilling activity within three miles of the epicenters. No recent wells have been completed within the area, and immediate checks of wells within the radius area have been conducted to verify compliance with the permit conditions. The KCC says its investigation procedures are outlined in the seismic action plan that was developed with the Kansas Geological Survey and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

It investigates if an earthquake of 3.5 or stronger occurs in the state or “when the earthquake scores 17 or higher seismic movement points that take into account variables such as risk, agglomeration and timing”

The KCC says it will continue to monitor any earthquakes in the state.
