San Jose Earthquakes 2020 Post-mortem team: Jacob Akanrig

Jacob Akanrej definitely had to wait for his turn to enter the field in a competitive match for the San Jose Earthquakes. He was signed as a local player in 2017 when he was 15 years old, and he was clearly a club project, and because they got used to the professional environment and waited for him to mature physically, he was waiting for his time.

While Matthias Almeida isn’t afraid to play the youth, he also had a core group of players that he relied mainly on, especially in defense. And Akanyirige wasn’t a member of that core group in 2020 either.

However, while he played two matches on loan to Renault 1868 FC in 2019, he finally made it to the field in 2020 on September 16, and made a surprise start in midfield against Portland Timbers, a match that ended in a 1-1 draw.

I think one of the surprises was that Akanerig played in the center of defense. Previously, as far as I know, he was touted as a defender back and, in fact, played for Renault as a right-back. Perhaps his size gave San Jose a reason to switch the player’s path to become the center of the defense, and to be fair, a lot of teens are seeing position changes over time. Remember, Nick Lima entered college as a striker before coming out as a full back, so this substitution – temporary or permanent – for Akanyirige isn’t a shock when you think about it.

The sample size is small, of course, but I thought Akanyirige looked so good in his only minutes of the season. Portland was a mischievous team, and was more than capable of scoring hated goals in earthquakes (which they have done in other matches!), So their 1-1 draw is a good performer in terms of score, but I also thought his solo performance indicated he could stop In the MLS.

Unfortunately, it appeared that Akanyirige sustained an injury either during that match or immediately afterward, and from there fell out of the standings. Is it a difficult break for the player? Clearly yes. But I think trio Florian Jungferth, Oswaldo Alanis and Tanner Besson have closed in the center of the defense and deserved to run there too.

So Akanyirige will have to wait a little longer for his next taste of Earthquakes Football. The club chose his contract option for 2021, so they will have another year to try and break the squad. Again, we haven’t seen much of it, but if it continues to evolve, next year might be a good time to really start shining in San Jose. stay tuned.
