ShakeAlertLA will no longer send earthquake alerts after December 31, and the city is urging residents to download the MyShake statewide app, as the MyShake app is available for download through the Apple Store or Google Play.

The ShakeAlertLA app familiar to many Los Angeles residents will stop issuing earthquake warnings after December 31.

The mayor’s office said on Wednesday that the app, which was developed to issue alerts when earthquake strengths reach 4.5 magnitudes or more, has issued 100,000 early warnings for all recordable earthquake activities since its launch in 2018.

As ShakeAlertLA nears retirement, the city is urging residents to download the MyShake app statewide.

Why will ShakeAlertLA be discontinued?

The mayor’s office said ShakeAlertLA was meant to serve as a bridge for a statewide earthquake early warning system. The city has worked with other governments to share experiences and assist them in developing earthquake early warning programs. Now that a statewide system is in place, ShakeAlertLA will stop sending alerts at the start of 2021.

So what is MyShake?

MyShake is a statewide system announced by the Governor on October 17, 2019. The MyShake app is available for download through the Apple Store or Google Play.

How it works?

MyShake uses ground motion sensors to detect earthquakes. If an earthquake of great strength is detected, a message warns of vibration before it starts.

MyShake researchers have also trained an algorithm to use smartphone accelerometers to recognize signs of earthquake movement. Its creators note that when more people use the app, the algorithm will work better. Some phones have better sensors than others, but they continue to improve with newer smartphones, most of which can record earthquakes up to 5 degrees within 10 kilometers from their center.

MyShake also provides damage and vibration reports provided by other users, and information from the USGS and other earthquake authorities.

When will I get an alert?

MyShake delivers ShakeAlerts alerts across California of earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 or greater. Depending on how close you are to the earthquake, the alarm may arrive before, during, or after the vibration. Even a few seconds of warning can help save lives.
