Through the constant efforts of the scientists, INCOIS has focused its research and development efforts towards advanced procedures such as water level inversion, real-time inundation modeling, and the use of near-field GNSS measurements to characterize rupture in real time and 3D mapping of coastal areas at risk.

We will continue to work towards building coastal communities that are resilient in the face of disasters by adopting the latest scientific developments and undertaking community preparedness initiatives within a multi-risk framework. Dr Srinivasa Kumar, Director of INCOIS, said in a statement that as part of its focus on multiple hazards, ITEWS has already been enhanced with the ability to issue storm surge warnings.

The 24X7 Operational Tsunami Warning Center at INCOIS created and provided tsunami modeling and coastal flood mapping.

The Tsunami Center has also been providing tsunami guidance to 25 countries in the Indian Ocean region since October 2011 as a regional service provider for the tsunami under the UNESCO-IOC Intergovernmental Coordination Group for Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System (IOC), along with Australia and Indonesia.

India is the first country in the Indian Ocean region and Odisha is the first to achieve tsunami recognition ready. Tsunami preparedness also enhances the ability of communities to respond effectively to other coastal hazards such as hurricanes and storm surges.
