The Christmas morning blast shakes downtown Nashville

NASHVILLE, Tennessee – An explosion of largely deserted streets shook downtown Nashville early on Christmas morning, shattering windows, damaging buildings and injuring three people. The authorities said they believed the explosion was deliberate. The FBI is leading the investigation.

Nashville Metro Police spokesman Don Aaron said police responded to the shooting call shortly before 6 a.m. but found no immediate signs of gunfire, although officers noticed a suspicious car and called for a dangerous unit. While they were waiting, the car exploded.

Aaron said that three people were taken to area hospitals for treatment, but none of them was in critical condition. He said that some people were taken to the central administration area for questioning, but he declined to provide further details.

FBI spokesman Joel Seskowicz said the FBI would take over the investigation. Federal investigators from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were at the scene. The FBI is the primary law enforcement agency responsible for investigating federal crimes, such as explosive violations and acts of terrorism.

At noon, police dogs continued to search cars and buildings in the vicinity.

A man from Philadelphia staying at a nearby hotel said that when he heard the explosion, he knew it was not a harmless noise.

“It was a very loud explosion,” said Joseph Favara. We tried to justify it as an earthquake or something. But it was clearly not an earthquake. ”He said he traveled to Tennessee with his family for Christmas because the state has COVID-19 restrictions more flexible than Philadelphia.

Vavara went outside to look at the damage but police barriers had already been set up.

Black smoke and flames were seen rising early Friday from the area filled with bars, restaurants and other retail establishments known to be the heart of the downtown Nashville tourist scene.

The buildings in the vicinity and beyond shook after a loud bang.

Buck McCoy, who lives near the area, posted videos on Facebook showing water pouring on his roof. Alarms go off in the background and people scream in distress in the background. Fire is clear in the street outside.

McCoy says he heard gunfire 15 minutes before the explosion that shook his building. McCoy said the windows of his house were completely shattered.

“All my windows, every one of them blew into the next room. If I were standing there it would be horrible,” he said.

“It felt like a bomb,” he told The Associated Press.

There were about four cars on fire. I don’t know if it’s so hot that they caught fire, and the trees were all blown up, ”he said.

President Donald Trump has been briefed, according to White House spokesperson Jude Derry, who said Trump, who is vacationing in Florida, will continue to receive regular updates. The US Department of Justice said Acting Attorney General Jeff Rosen has been informed and directed to provide all Department resources to assist with the investigation.

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee said on Twitter that the state will provide the resources to “determine what happened and who is responsible. Please join MariaLeeTN as I pray for those who have been injured and we thank all of the first responders who acted so quickly this morning.”

Nashville Mayor John Cooper said the city was lucky that the number of casualties was limited.
