Auckland, Hamilton, and Toranga are prone to earthquakes in the Honua Ranges and Huraki Plains

Researchers said faults in southern Auckland and northern Waikato could cause earthquakes that caused massive damage, affecting Oakland, Hamilton and Toranga.

They raised their concerns after simulating the Earth’s motion from hypothetical earthquakes on the Kerepehi and Wairoa North fault lines.

The Kerepehi Fault runs roughly from south to north for 80 kilometers ashore along the Hauraki Plains, continues to sea and extends into Hauraki Bay. The North Wairowa Fault runs near the western edge of the Honoa Mountain Range and is also close to a south-north alignment.

Researchers, mostly from the University of Auckland and Canterbury, model ground motion of characteristic earthquakes with a magnitude of 7.3 on the Kerepehi fault and a force of 6.6 on the Wairoa North fault.

For the Kerepehi Fault event, there would be intensity to violent, prolonged duration, and vibration near the source, the researchers said in a paper published in the New Zealand Journal of Geology and Geophysics.

An earthquake on a fault beneath the Hauraki Plains could cause intense and prolonged shaking.

This vibration would have the potential to release liquefaction that could destroy flood defense networks and farmland in the Hauraki Plains. The newspaper said Oakland, Hamilton and Turanga may have moderate to very strong vibrations.

The impacts will be greater in Auckland for an earthquake on the North Wairowa fault, with particularly intense shaking in Hunua Ranges water supply dams, and less severe at the airport, CBD and harbor.

“Road, rail and transportation networks are prone to disruption as they converge at infrastructure hotspots 10 kilometers from the fault in South Auckland,” the newspaper said.

Associate Professor Liam Watherspoon of the University of Auckland said intense vibration across an area with some vital infrastructure in Auckland, including water supply dams, could cause massive damage.

A rupture in the North Wairowa Fault, which runs near the western edge of the Honoa Mountain Range, can cause severe vibration in some water supply dams.

Dr Jennifer Eccles, another researcher from the University of Auckland, said there was a need for a better understanding of the errors and the risks they pose.

“Although there are fewer earthquakes in the upper part of the North Island compared to other parts of New Zealand, exposure to seismic and related hazards is significant,” said Eckles.

Research on the Kerepehi Fault published in 2016 said that the potential for massive damage to Hauraki Plains buildings without a specific seismic design (those that were built before 1960) could pose a significant risk to lives and livelihoods.

For Auckland, crack rupture can damage unreinforced masonry buildings, chimneys and bulkheads.

The information on the GNS Science website said that research indicates the possibility of a major earthquake somewhere along the Kerepehi fault every 1,000 years.

An active GNS Bug Database said the repeat period for the Northern Weirwa fault is unknown.
