An earthquake struck central Croatia, killing five and damaging buildings

SISAK, Croatia (Reuters) – A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck central Croatia on Tuesday, killing five people, injuring at least 20 others and jolting several neighboring countries, officials and residents said.

Rescuers pulled people from under the rubble of collapsed buildings in the town of Petringa, and army forces were sent to the area to help.

The earthquake was also felt in the Croatian capital, Zagreb, and as far away as the Austrian capital Vienna. Slovenia shut down its only nuclear power plant as a precaution.

This is the second earthquake to hit the region in two days.

The German GFZ Center for Geosciences Research said the quake struck at a depth of 10 km and had its epicenter in Petringa, 50 km south of Zagreb.

And Croatian state television reported that the mayor of the neighboring town of Jalina said four people had been killed there. In Petringa, a 12-year-old boy was killed, the N1 news channel quoted a town official as saying.

Tomislav Fabijanek, head of emergency medical services in Sisak, said several people were infected in Petrinja and Sisak.

He said, “There are fractures and concussions in the brain, and some of them must undergo surgery.”

Prime Minister Adrij Plenkovic, who rushed to Petringa, said: “We have information about the killing of a girl.

“The army is here to help.” “We will have to take some people out of Petringa because it is not safe to be here,” Blinkovic said.

The head of the hospital in Sisak said later that he was treating 20 people, two of them seriously injured.

N1 showed rescue workers in Petringa pulling a man and child out of the rubble. Both of them were alive.

Other footage showed a house with collapsed roof. The reporter said she did not know if anyone was inside.

N1 also said that a kindergarten was destroyed in the earthquake but had no children. She added that the situation is “difficult” in retirement homes in the Petranga region.

In the aftermath of the earthquake, piles of stones, bricks and tiles littered the streets of Tringa, and cars parked on the road were crushed by falling debris.

A worker repairing a roof in a village outside Petringa told N1 that the earthquake threw him to the ground. He said that nine of the ten homes in the village were destroyed.

Diane Lovren, the Croatian international footballer, said on Instagram that his hotel in the Adriatic city of Novalja has made it available to the 16 families most affected by Petinga.

Wrapped in blankets

Residents also felt the earthquake in Zagreb as people rushed to the streets, some of them littered with broken roof tiles and other debris.

Patients and medical personnel were evacuated from the Sveti Doh hospital in Zagreb, and many were left sitting on street chairs wrapped in blankets.

In Graz, Austria’s second largest city, about 200 kilometers (130 miles) north of Petringa, tall buildings shook for about two minutes, according to ORF. In the county of Carinthia, about 300 kilometers northwest of Petringa, the ground shook for several minutes and people described how their furniture, Christmas trees and lamps wiggle.

In Slovenia, the STA news agency said the country’s only nuclear power plant, 100 kilometers (60 miles) from the epicenter, was closed as a precaution.

The official Croatian news agency Hina said the earthquake was felt in 12 countries.

Interior Minister Davor Bozinovic said that Croatia expects help from the European Union because it has activated its emergency mechanism.

On Monday, a 5.2-magnitude earthquake jolted central Croatia near Petranga. In March, a 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck Zagreb, killing one and injuring 27.
