Migrant workers in India paid the highest price for the Covid crisis – BBC News
With the second largest case in the world, India is among the countries most affected by Covid-19. The early closure came as a huge blow to migrant workers in the country. Millions of them – all in informal jobs – suddenly lost their jobs and ran out of money. The government closed state borders and banned buses and trains in cities far from home. Afraid of what was ahead and sure, they began to travel hundreds or thousands of miles to reach their villages. Now, a few months later, it seems that the pandemic is severe and many informal jobs are returning, but migrant workers are still struggling to make ends meet.
