Report: San Jose Earthquakes coach Mathias Almeida turned down Cruz Azul’s offer

It wouldn’t be an off-season MLS season without rumors about San Jose Earthquakes coach Mathias Almeida, but according to a report from Argentine journalist Cesar Luis Merlo, Almeida turned down the last offer and would remain in the MLS.

Cruz Azul is the latest Liga MX team to be linked with Almeyda, with reports indicating that La Maquina has made an official bid for their services. However, Merlo reiterated on Wednesday that Almeida will indeed remain with the earthquakes, subject to a contract until 2022.

Almeida recently completed his second season with San Jose in 2020, leading the earthquakes during the roller coaster season that saw them clinch the last western place in the 2020 MLS Audi Cup Qualifiers. This came despite a few lopsided mid-season defeats and a 16-goal squad in 23 matches.

It has been an erratic campaign, but earthquakes have continually improved, giving reason to believe it could advance in 2021 with Almeida getting yet another reason to move its unique system.

Meanwhile, Almeida’s name will continue to emerge with every Liga MX coaching vacancy, considering his previous success in the league as Chivas Guadalajara Manager from 2015-18.
