‘I thought my husband fell off his treadmill’: An earthquake was recorded in Scotland as public reports rise

A “small earthquake” was recorded in Skirling in the Borders this morning as a number of reports from the public revealed that they heard “loud boom” and “room quiver” as a member of the audience assumed her husband fell from a mill.

A seismic alert was issued in Skirling by the UK’s National Seismological Agency, the National Geographic Survey, at 11.18 am this morning, December 31.

The NGS recorded a magnitude 1.9 earthquake at a depth of 7.9 km and an intensity 3 EMS (European Large Scale Seismic Scale).

The recorded earthquake news comes as people across the border report that they have either heard or felt the eruption.

The NGS received a small number of reports from members of the public in the region.

A local Skirling resident told NGS: “There was a loud bang and the room shook.

“Even though my husband fell off the treadmill.

“I called the neighbors over Babin and they felt it, too.”

On the Facebook community page of Biggar residents, an audience member asked “Did anyone hear a loud explosion a few minutes ago?” Which met with strong agreement with over 150 comments from users saying they either felt or heard the explosion.

One user replied, “Yes! The house shook, he had no idea what it was.”

Other reports of “loud bang” were also recorded in Symington, Peebles and Stubo.

However, seismologists told the public that “no need to worry” because this accident was a “typical small earthquake.”

NGS seismologist Glenn Ford said: “This is a typical small earthquake that occurs frequently in the UK region, but this event is large enough for members of the public to feel and definitely not cause for concern.

“Only approximately 10% of the 200-300 earthquakes occurring in the UK are large enough for the public to be aware of them. Although not a common perception, earthquakes occur more frequently in the UK than people realize and review recent activity will showcase this site.” BGS “.

According to the US Geological Survey, its magnitude 5.3 is a moderate earthquake, and 6.3 is a strong earthquake, much higher than the 1.9 recorded earthquake in Skirling.
