There are new details in the wake of undersea earthquakes this week along the coast of southern Oregon.

Two earthquakes struck west of the coast of southern Oregon late Monday and early Tuesday, December 21 and December 22, but experts were not concerned about the possibility of a tsunami.

The largest of the two earthquakes came just after 11 p.m. Monday, about 127 miles west of Bandon and 6 miles below the surface of the Earth, according to the United States Geological Survey. Its strength was 5.7 degrees.

A second earthquake measuring 3.2 on the Richter scale struck nearby around 2:15 am Tuesday, about 115 miles west of Langlois and 4 miles below the surface of the Earth. Langlois is located between Bandon and Port Orford in County Cary.

No widespread damage to the ground has been reported from the earthquakes, but a Coos Bay business owner suspected the events were the cause of a broken window discovered Tuesday morning.

“I think the correct vibrations were to shatter the window, but not to damage (inside),” said Steve Schneiderman, owner of Marshfield Mercantile on US Highway 101.

Only one window of the building had been shattered – the other windows had recently been replaced, Schneiderman said. The building was built in the mid-1960s on columns, and most of the adjacent buildings are the most recent.

“I doubt that was related to the earthquake,” said Schneiderman. “That’s all old dredge filling here.”

There is no evidence that the breakage was the result of an attempted steal, given that the building’s motion sensors were not triggered, nothing else was moved or taken in, and no rock or anything else was left.

Schneiderman said that a video of the crash, although hampered by a bookcase, shows the window shattering outward before a nearby hanging frame falls off.

There were no tsunami warnings, warnings, hours, or threats after the earthquakes, according to the US Tsunami Warning System. The center cannot predict when the next tsunami will be, but it can predict which earthquakes will likely cause large waves.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, some tsunami waves cannot be predicted in time for an official warning. She recommends watching for other warning signs, such as strong earthquakes, a loud roar from the ocean, or sudden changes in sea level.

The Oregon Office of Emergency Management (OMI) says those in low-lying areas must move immediately to higher ground in the event of a tsunami, and that coastal residents must be prepared for two weeks of evacuation.

After a series of similar earthquakes in the same area in August 2019, Oregon Emergency Management Geological Hazards Program Coordinator Althea Rizzo told Coastal Pilot Carrie that the region experiences many earthquakes annually.

“But they are very far from the coast and do not have any impact except for just reminding us that earthquakes can happen at any time,” she said.

Rizzo encourages people to come up with a plan to better prepare for such a disaster.

“It could be buying more bottled water, extra food, and taking the route to evacuate from the tsunami,” she said.

According to the OEM’s website, Oregon is an earthquake country. In 1993, western Oregon experienced two devastating earthquakes, Scotts Mills (magnitude 5.6) and Klamath Falls (magnitude 5.9 and 6). Mulala High School and the State Capitol building were badly damaged.

In addition to the historical record, prehistoric evidence of major subduction zone earthquakes, such as the Cascadia Subduction Zone, and associated tsunami waves has been found in coastal wetlands along the Pacific Northwest Coast.

“We must be aware and take measures to prevent the risks that earthquakes pose to our homes and families,” the OEM website reads. “We need to prepare for an earthquake before it happens. By preparing now for future earthquakes, we can protect our homes and our families.”

The OEM encourages people to prepare to be on their own for at least two weeks. Companies have a lot to plan for in order to recover from a natural disaster. This includes getting employees back to work, how to bring computer systems back online, how to make repairs to buildings, and how inventory will be retooled.

The OEM also recommends that homeowners take earthquake preparedness and mitigation efforts, such as retrofitting their homes with earthquakes.
