The president calls on the government to declare a catastrophic state of emergency

Zagreb, January 3, 2021 – President Zoran Milanovic said on Sunday that the government should declare a state of catastrophic emergency due to the devastating December 29 earthquake that struck Petrinja and other areas of Sisak Muslavina district.

“I don’t know why the catastrophic emergency has not been declared yet. These are important matters from a legal standpoint,” Milanovic said in an interview with commercial station N1 on Sunday.

Milanovic explained that the declaration of a catastrophic emergency was necessary to define the chain of command and to know who will spend the funds needed to counter the effects of the earthquake.

The President, who is Commander in Chief, praised the army’s participation in Petringa and other earthquake-stricken areas.

Milanovic believes that the National Civil Protection Authority can manage the effects of the earthquake, provided it is given enough money and responsibilities.

Comparing the situation in Petringa, which was struck by a magnitude 6.2 earthquake, and in Zagreb after the March 22 earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale, Milanovic said that Petringa has been ravaged by the Earth while Zagreb will always have the financial strength for reconstruction.

However, he expressed dissatisfaction with the current situation in the capital, claiming that Zagreb was in a state of neglect and citing examples of impolite city possessions.

As for infection with the Coronavirus, Milanovic again called for the population to be vaccinated.

He added that since the beginning of his presidential term, he was fair in his relationship with the government.

The Centar parliamentary party on Sunday afternoon also called on the government to declare a catastrophic state of emergency and criticized the Blinkovic government for how it handled the fallout from the earthquake in Sisak Moslavina County.
