Team San Jose Earthquakes 2020 Post-mortem: Paul Marie

Paul Marie returned to his third season with San Jose Earthquakes in 2020. The French full-back was used as an option on the bench and an occasional start in Matthias Almeida’s first season with the team, and that was his turn again in their second season together.

He has some very obvious skills: he manages to play either wing in defense, holds the game in front of him and adapts to being a sub and jumps straight into battle quite well. In this respect, he is in many ways a perfect player for the Almeida system, which needs the full support of players and the ability to jump on a screaming train while it is flying the track.

Marie’s playing time was very similar to his time in 2019. I think if there had been more games, he probably would have played a little more, and he has played in more games last season.

He also scored his first goal in Major League Soccer in 2020, during a run in which the full-back seemed to score nearly every game.

So Mary does a job and does it well. He is 25 years old, knows the system and the club and so the club recently signed him to a new multi-year contract.

I think in some ways it’s a little surprising. Do teams want to keep backup copies of their squad? Of course. But the “conventional wisdom” in MLS often means going into backups, unless they are potential youth or veterans. Mary doesn’t fit either of the bulldozers – it’s a reserve type in its early years, or close to it.

Most of the teams will pass from it, whether it’s fair or not, but it’s worth considering two factors: Earthquakes might be totally comfortable with what it brings and he’s already well versed in the Almeida system, so there’s a comfort factor, and who knows, they might think he could pay to be the start one day. . We haven’t seen him a regular freshman yet and based on a rather small sample size he looks like a good backup, but you never know, I guess.

So Mary will likely return to 2021 and beyond. The first name may not be on the team’s paper in 2020, but it has been involved in the case and appears to be doing its part in an unusual scheme. We’ll see what the future holds for him in earthquakes.
