Irish Catholic Church leader apologizes to survivors of mothers ‘and babies’ homes – BBC News
The head of the Irish Catholic Church has apologized to survivors of unmarried women in church homes for unmarried women and their children. A consultation on the homes was later published, as they also acted as an orphanage and adoption center. It reveals shortcomings, horrific abuse and shocking levels of child mortality. About 9,000 children died in homes in the 1920s and 1990s. Archbishop Eamon Martin said that “the church was clear that people often stigmatized, judged and rejected them as part of that culture.” Sophie Raworth introduces Irish News correspondent Chris Page to BBC News Ten.
