A former employee of the Hong Kong consulate in the UK has told the BBC that he was tortured in China and accused of inciting political unrest in the city. Simon Cheng, a Hong Kong citizen who worked in the UK government for almost two years, was arrested for 15 days on a trip to the Chinese mainland in August. “I was tied up, my eyes covered and hooded,” the 29-year-old told me. According to UK government sources, his claims – which are being beaten and forced to sign confessions – are believed to be credible. After our interview, British Foreign Minister Dominic Raab called the Chinese ambassador. “We are outraged by the shameful ill-treatment that Mr. China suffered when he was arrested in mainland China … and we have made it clear that we hope that the Chinese authorities will review and hold accountable,” Raab told the BBC. .
