How to create a safe building during an earthquake? This is the challenge that the young designers discovered at Upton Junior School in Broadstairs.

As part of the Our Planet topic, fourth graders investigate the causes of earthquakes and how buildings are planned and built to withstand natural tremors and aftershocks.

Fourth-year president Nicola Sedgwick said: “Children have learned that the surface of the Earth is made up of a lot of moving masses called plates, and when they suddenly slide over one another or move away, it causes an earthquake.

“We looked at how to make buildings earthquake-proof including the use of steel frames to allow the structure to move with jolts, automatic window shutters, shock absorbers that absorb earthquakes and even computer-controlled weights to help reduce motion.”

The girls and boys working at home and at school came up with a series of ideas made of any flexible materials that bend and move but can return to their original shape.

The shape and foundations of the building are also important considerations, and this has resulted in a set of thoughtful ideas.

These included a plastic trough modified as a building on springs to absorb earthquake energy as well as a continuous outer wall and vaulted roof for additional strength, as well as a central counterweight.

The modified plastic bottle was another suggestion that was a “controlled mass wetting” moving to the side with a jolt as the weight pushed the building in the opposite direction.

A masonry brick building showed deep foundations, rolling weights on the roof, warning lights and sirens, a number on the exoskeleton so the helicopter could identify it, automatically closing windows and a safe area outside the building for people to gather.

An adventurous youth even put an oscillating gel on the table next to his construction to simulate the movement of an earthquake while his building remained safe and stable by comparison.
