Etna volcano, the highest and busiest volcano in Europe, has erupted spectacularly over the past few days. The pictures showed volcanic lava emerging from the vents, while other pictures showed “fireworks” from the explosions.

According to VolcanoDiscovery, a “swarm of small earthquakes” occurred under the eastern flank of Etna on Sunday morning.

Scales tend to measure up to about 2.3 and occur between 10 and 20 kilometers underground.

Analysts say the earthquakes indicate a fault zone within the Earth has been “activated”, although the reason for this is not certain.

It is not mentioned whether the locals were affected by the earthquakes, although it is not believed that they were strong.

Boris Pink, a volcanologist at INGV-Osservatorio Etneo in Sicily, has been tracking volcano activity for the past few weeks.

He said Etna had “unleashed” a so-called paroxysmal outbreak event on the evening of January 18th.

“Note that this is a very modest and completely harmless activity that takes place at the summit, away from populated areas.”

Earlier, a volcanologist said Etna was “very active and amazing at the start of the year”.

Additionally, yesterday morning’s earthquake activity is not the first to hit the volcano in recent weeks.

Before the end of last year, Pinke said, there was another “visible” swarm that struck the area.

Etna is located on the island of Sicily above the city of Catania. More than a quarter of the island’s population is believed to live on the slopes of the volcano, which provides tourism and soil useful for agriculture.
