It has been more than three years since the devastating struggle for the recapture of Mosul from a group calling itself the Islamic State, its old city is still in ruins. The project, entitled “Reviving the Spirit of Mosul,” has hired believers to work together to rebuild the landmark al-Nuri Mosque and the historic churches of al-Saa’a and al-Tahera. Pope Francis plans to visit the three sites during a visit by the Pope to Iraq in March, but recently questioned the trip, raising concerns about gathering people in the Covid-19 pandemic.
