Penrose said he shouted at his brother to warn him of an upcoming slip. When the avalanche reached them, he pulled out his backpack that contained an airbag – but said it didn’t turn on, so nothing happened.

He wrote, “Somehow I only moved about 20 yards and stayed above the snow (miracle). Only after I was buried in the bottom of my chest did I let myself out.”

When the chaos subsided, Penrose said he heard his brother asking for help. Thankfully, he managed to find it and take it out safely.

Everyone else in their group also managed to exit safely.

It all happened on the same day that four skiers died after being buried in an avalanche in Milk Creek Canyon.

The Utah Avalanche Center said there were “close calls” with the avalanches on Saturday: one in American Fork Canyon, where the snowmobile was nearly buried, and the other near Moffett Peak in Uinta. It was not known until Saturday if the latter was the same accident as the Penrose group. The cause of the slip was not known.
