Nashville, Tennessee (WSMV) – Most of us know that living in Tennessee carries the risk of severe hurricanes, floods and storms.

One threat that you may not pay as much attention is earthquakes, but state officials are using this month to change that.

Tennessee is no stranger to earthquakes.

It’s frequent here because we’re stuck between two seismic regions.

To the west is the New Madrid seismic zone, and to the east is the East Tennessee seismic zone.

Both can cause devastating earthquakes.

The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency has designated February as Earthquake Awareness Month and they want you to have a plan to stay safe.

TEMA recommends putting into practice the projection, cover, and hold system.

Here’s how it works:

During an earthquake, get down to the ground before the earthquake hits you.

Take shelter under a sturdy desk or table and keep doing so until the shaking stops.

Next time you’re at work, school, and especially at home, find places to look for shelter. That way if there is an earthquake, you are ready to take a step back, take cover, and hold on.
