The National Seismology Center said a 3.5-magnitude earthquake struck Ladakh around 10 p.m. Tuesday. The quake occurred just days after a strong earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale hit Tajikistan, while people felt tremors for 30-40 seconds in Delhi-NCR, and other parts of northern India.

Earlier on February 13th, a strong earthquake shook Jammu and Kashmir overnight as people fled their homes to escape from the besieged with reports of cracks in several structures due to the earthquake.

There have been reports of earthquake-induced panic as locals in many places in the valley spend a sleepless night, frightened after the shocks.

“A strong earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale occurred at J&K at 10.34 pm Friday,” said disaster management officials.

The epicenter of the earthquake was in Tajikistan at latitude 31.57 degrees north latitude and longitude 75.09 degrees east. It was located 10 kilometers inside the earth’s crust. Earthquakes with a magnitude of 6 to 6.9 on the Richter scale were classified in terms of seismicity as “strong”.

Kashmir has a history of earthquake devastation because the valley is located in a region highly prone to earthquakes.

More than 80,000 people were killed on both sides of the Line of Control in Abi Kashmir in an earthquake on October 8, 2005, measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale.
