Didn’t you feel it? ‘ Not an earthquake, but likely Sonic Boom

At about 5 p.m. Tuesday, an explosion rocked parts of San Diego County. Residents of Golden Hill, Del Siro and San Carlos confirmed that they felt the vibration while others heard a loud boom. Twitter users across the county wondered about the mysterious event, wondering if it was an earthquake.

In response to Sunnyhaze2006, the US Geological Survey, which tracks seismic accidents, confirmed at 6:31 pm that it was not an earthquake but was likely an acoustic explosion. Although it couldn’t provide much other information, the agency encouraged users to submit an unknown event report on their website.

Earlier sonic explosions were reported in San Diego County with one in June 2012 likely caused by aircraft associated with the United States Naval Air Force.
