Selected disposal well operations halted or reduced in response to a magnitude 4.2 earthquake near Manchester

MANCHESTER, Oklahoma (KFOR) – The Oklahoma Corporation has ordered operators of designated disposal wells in the region of a magnitude 4.2 earthquake to either stop work or reduce size.

The earthquake, which was recorded by the US Geological Survey as occurring at 7:56 am on Friday morning, was recorded with a magnitude of 4.2. The epicenter was located near Manchester, according to a press release issued by the coordination center.

The Earthquake Control Center induced earthquakes have ordered a halt to work at Arbuckle’s waste disposal wells located three miles from the epicenter.

Arbuckle disposal wells located three to 10 miles from the epicenter were instructed to reduce disposal to no more than 50 percent of the average of the last 30 days.

These measures will reduce the volumes disposed of by an estimated 7,000 barrels per day.

Researchers say that eliminating the Arbuckle Formation in parts of Oklahoma increases the risk of induced seismic activity.
