Jeremy Lelico’s completed sand art continued only minutes away on New Brighton Beach.

The memorial of artist Jeremy Lelico’s earthquake on New Brighton Beach continued until the ocean washed it away.

The sand art remained long enough to trigger a flurry of applause and photos from an appreciative small gathering.

Lillico’s design listed the date of the earthquake that killed 185 people in Christchurch 10 years earlier on February 22, 2011.

And above history was the pink window design from Christ Church Cathedral, the “Sure Rise” slogan from Edmunds’ old town baking powder and cookbook.

Liliko said the waves were just too young for a regular surfing in the morning, and instead he felt inspired by the emotions of the day to create sand art.

Lilikou said he created the artwork “on the fly” after the weak waves thwarted his surfing plans.

“There were some really nice comments, and applause from the top of the sidewalk.”

The New Brighton resident and designer regularly creates beach sand art and has also completed street artworks around town.

Liliko said he was in Christchurch, at his home, on the day of the 2011 earthquake, and he remembered looking and seeing everything in motion.

A national memorial service was held at the Canterbury Earthquake National Memorial in Christchurch on Monday to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the February 22 earthquake.
