The game has a special tone, sometimes approaching something like a public announcement (when a aftershock threatens it, the game challenges you to choose whether you’re looking for open spaces, or structures with a flexible look for shelter), at other points like daylight soap. Neither a great movie nor a highly focused standalone game, Disaster Report IV belongs to a category of games that have almost disappeared: a mid-budget game. It is struggling to match its ambitions from the location of this central region. The translation work is inappropriately distracting (such as a routine word like “immersion”, for example, it is presented as “monetization”). Designers ’vision of capturing stationary pieces – dropping skyscrapers that lift tsunami waves of dust and all that remains – is never matched by the technical ability of programmers. The experience is also full of strange and meaningless design options: this, for example, is one of the few games where a hero has to visit the bathroom for the basic break.

With all these faults, the Fourth Disaster Report remains an unforgettable journey. As the aftershock rushes, screams rise, frantically looking around to see if the next wave of damage is likely, and where the game will provide a compelling and frightening glimpse of how it feels by living this very natural disaster. (This is especially true of its virtual reality mode, which was unlocked halfway through adventure, putting the player into a terrifying drama.)
