In Iceland, 18,000 earthquakes over days are a possible indication of an eruption on the horizon

Similar tremors have been observed before volcanic eruptions in the past, and the Icelandic Met Office said magma movements were a possible cause of continued activity. The agency warned that an eruption could occur within days or weeks.

“The two tectonic plates are moving away from each other, and this movement created the conditions for magma to surface,” said Freysteinn Sigmundsson, a professor of geophysics research at the University of Iceland.

Dr Einarsson said that of the five volcanoes in the Reykjanes region, magma movement has been observed near at least three of them since the start of the seismic ring in December 2019. “We may enter a new active period in the peninsula,” he added. “There appears to be food for some of the volcanic eruptions.”

Iceland has about 30 active volcanoes, but volcanologists say an eruption in Reykjanes will not threaten populated areas of the peninsula. “We are talking about a volcanic eruption, not an eruption,” said Dr. Sigmundsson, explaining that the lava is likely to erupt with a low explosive force.

He added that it was unlikely to be any destructive activity like the eruption in 2010, when another volcano in Iceland released a plume of ash so massive that it caused one of the most significant air traffic disruptions in decades, leaving millions of passengers stranded. The Met Office said volcanic activity could occur near Vajradalsvale, 20 miles south of Reykjavik, or near Mount Keeler nearby. Hundreds of volcanic enthusiasts have been installed on live cameras in the area, and a website asks “Has an eruption yet?” Keep them updated. The Met Office said that among the possible scenarios, ongoing seismic activities could decrease in the coming days or weeks, but the peninsula may also experience more earthquakes, with strengths up to 6.5 degrees.
