The Kermadec Islands earthquake has caused more than 300 landslides on Raoul Island

GeoNet said the magnitude 8.1 earthquake in the Kermadec Islands on March 5 caused more than 300 landslides on steep forest cliffs and rugged coastal cliffs on Raul Island.

The most spectacular landslides were around the Blue Lagoon, and along the rugged coast. There was a large slide at Pills Beach, as it collapsed about 400 meters of coastal cliffs, leaving a column of sediment in the ocean.

GeoNet said most of the landslides were relatively small landslides, landslides and avalanches of about 100-200 cubic meters, but there were some larger landslides of about 20,000 cubic meters – about two rugby fields deep into the rocks.

As a tool for predicting landslides induced by earthquakes, most of the landslides were on coastal coasts, while some of the largest landslides were at the crater rim.

GeoNet said the ShakeMap NZ program estimated the earth’s vibration from the earthquake to be between 0.15 grams and 0.75 grams.

The landslides were mapped using images captured by GeoNet and NZ Defense Force teams that visited Raul Island after the earthquake, and using an image captured by the Pleiades satellite.

GNS Science employees went ashore on Raul Island to restore the data communications link that was lost during the March 5 event.

The main earthquake activity began with a 7.3-magnitude event off the Eastern Cape around 2.30 am. This was followed by an earthquake measuring 7.4 below the sea floor near Raul Island at around 6.40 am.

A closer look at landslides in the Blue Lagoon

Then at around 8:30 a.m., an 8.1-magnitude earthquake struck near Raul Island, the largest and northernmost of the Kermadyk Islands.

GNS, MetService and Department of Conservation have facilities on Raul Island. After the earthquakes, the Navy ship Canterbury headed for the island, which is about 1,000 kilometers northeast of New Zealand, with small teams from GNS and MetService on board.

DOC said there was no major damage to its buildings on the island.
