Earthquake victims begin to move to the container settlement in Jalina

Zagreb, March 27, 2021 – The head of the task force dealing with the fallout from last year’s earthquake, Tomo Medved, in Glena, on Saturday, handed over 39 residences and several service containers to Mayor Stepan Kostangevic for use by residents who were left homeless after a 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck medium Croatia on December 29.

The fifteenth container settlement was built in the county of Sisak Moslavina after the earthquake, with a cost of 3.7 million SEK.

Medved hoped that living in these containers would be much better than temporary residence. He declared a larger settlement in Sisak and four smaller settlements, two in Mošćenica and two in Sisak. The construction of ready-made residential properties in Major is almost completed.

In the process of reconstruction, Medved announced that repairs to homes with damaged chimneys would be intensified starting early May. He said that 25,000 homes in the county had suffered minor damage, such as damage to chimneys and gable walls.

Medved said it is important for people to have safe housing, support with food, electricity and other basic services while they wait for their homes to be repaired, which he said will take some time.

Mayor Kostangevic said 31 families, or 72 people, will live in the container housing settlement in Glina, and the first two families have moved today. He added that 55 Jalina residents were staying in Tobusko, and some will return to Jalina to live in the containers.
