150 years ago: the earthquake that caused “a sudden shaking of the ground, shook homes to their foundations”

Exactly 150 years ago, the D&S Times said this week: “On a Friday evening, an unusual earthquake occurred in several parts of northern England.”

The Middleton-in-Teesdale in Pennines has produced some live reporting. “The last shock was preceded by a sound that resembled a gusty wind, followed almost immediately by a sudden shaking of the ground, shaking the houses to their foundations, causing windows and pottery to shake, wobbling the beds, furniture and other articles that many residents who had gone to bed woke up anxiously,” he said.
