TEMPO.CO, Papua – A tectonic earthquake of magnitude 5.0 shook the Boven-de-Gaulle region of Papua Sunday night, March 28, at 22:34 local time. According to the Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG), the source of the earthquake was on Earth.

“It was a shallow earthquake caused by a local error,” said Bambang Sitio Brightno, Head of the Seismic and Tsunami Center at BMKG.

He said in a written statement that the source of the earthquake was at 5.61 south latitude and 141.06 east longitude. He said, “Exactly on the ground at a distance of 98 kilometers northeast of Tanah Merah, Boven Deguelle Regency, Papua.”

This type of earthquake is classified as shallow, and has a depth of 10 kilometers. The results of the source mechanism analysis showed that the earthquake has a thrust fault mechanism.

As a result, tremors were felt in a number of areas such as Tanah Merah and Oxybel on the MMI III earthquake intensity scale, which is similar to when trucks pass in front of a house.
