Shakin ‘Up The Backcountry ITD Aviation Division Helps Respond to 6.5-magnitude earthquake – Dailyfly.com Lewis-Clark Valley Community
This story was a collaboration between: Ross Engel, Director of Aviation Operations, and Air Navigation Tammy Schwen, Administrative Assistant to Air Navigation Tim Stephen, Safety / Education Coordinator, and Air Navigation Claudio Bertie, Geologists, Idaho Geological Survey
While the Idaho Department of Transportation (ITD) watched a build-up of snow in the central mountains of Idaho on March 31, we asked if this would be the storm that closes Idaho Highway 21. The snow calmed down after about 27 inches of the beautiful new white fuzz came down. Every year, this heavy snow brings the strong possibility of avalanches on the road along the Canyon Creek section of ID-21 from Grandjean to Banner Summit, and this section is sure to close at 2 pm. that day.
As if there wasn’t enough to go in the world, after it was sent home the previous week due to COVID-19, March 31 also brought a small “shake” to the central part of Idaho with a 6.5 earthquake!
The earthquake caused slipping rocks on Idaho roads, including Idaho Highway 75 near Stanley, Highway 21 north and south of Le Mans, Idaho Highway 55 between Horseshoe Bend and Cascade, and Idaho Highway 52 east of Emmett. ITD crews tried to respond immediately, but due to hundreds of aftershocks, they were forced to wait until they were safe enough to assess the damage and start moving the rocks.
With roads closed, on April 2, the ITD division of Flight Safety / Education Coordinator Tim Steffen directed ITD to the affected areas to explore the damage. They examined Highway 21, Bull Trout Lake, Earthquake Center, Seafoam Mine, and the Middle Fork of the Salmon River. This survey gave ITD D3 engineers a much better understanding of what lies between the rock slides on Highway 21 so that crews can start cleaning them safely.
While an estimated 2,000 open yards of debris were removed from Highway 21 (see photo gallery of slithers), aeronautics also assisted in earthquake research efforts. On April 9, director of aviation operations Ross Engel transferred geologists and researchers from Idaho Geological Survey (IGS) and Boise State University to the Lone and Thomas Creek upper airstrip on Kodiak planes in the state, to install seismic maps in remote areas near the epicenter. earthquake.
Surrounding this device is the seismic zone and is currently monitoring aftershocks to provide valuable information for geologists.

Each station consists of a ground-buried Trillium sensor, data recorder, power box, GPS receiver, a small group of photoelectric cells and the battery as a power source, most of which are housed in a waterproof container.
The team of geologists is planning to establish seismic stations for an extended period of time to help monitor the sequence of aftershocks triggered by the March 31 earthquake. They will visit the stations periodically to check their status and retrieve data for analysis.

Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless.
