WHO is launching progress indicators to measure access to assistive technology
Today, a billion people globally need assistive technology to lead a healthy, productive and dignified life, but only 1 in 10 has access. One of the biggest barriers to accessing assistive technology is the lack of data. Without relevant, quality information, decision-makers face major challenges in developing evidence-based policies and programs to improve access to their populations.
The resolution on improving access to assistive technology (resolution WHA71.8) encourages all Member States to take measures to improve access to assistive technologies and calls on the World Health Organization (WHO) to develop a global report on assistive technologies based on the best available scientific evidence and international experience.
WHO developed WHA71.8 Progress indicators for access to assistive technologies collect high-level information from all Member States to monitor and measure progress towards the resolution. Progress indicators monitor the status of access to assistive technologies in the ten specific areas listed in the resolution: legislation, population and geographical coverage, budget, line ministries, human resources, education and training, financial coverage, regulations and standards, and specific assistive technology initiatives.
