Reminding you to prepare for the “big”

Every time an earthquake strikes in California, you’ll know it instantly – if you’re online.

The moment an earthquake strikes, day or night, big or small, a torrent of tweets or one-word texts will inevitably appear in your feeds: “earthquake”.

That’s what happened early Monday, when a 4.0-magnitude earthquake jolted people awake in areas around Inglewood, and was followed shortly afterwards by a 3.3-magnitude earthquake nearby. As reported by the Los Angeles Times, they were part of a swarm.

On Wednesday, a 3.7-magnitude earthquake jolted western Fresno.

Although none of the earthquakes caused significant damage, they are – like all earthquakes that have not been catastrophic, and fortunately – a good reminder to prepare for the “Great Earthquake”, which has recently become more likely.

Here are answers to some of the questions you may have:

Wait – is a much larger earthquake more likely than it was previously?

Yeah! As my colleague Henry Fountain worryingly reported last year, an analysis of changes along earthquake faults in Southern California suggests that the pair of large earthquakes that occurred near Ridgecrest over the weekend of July 4 in 2019 (remember that?) Well what should I do?

As Jacob Margulis, the KPCC journalist who created the podcast “The Big One”, told me in 2019 after the Ridgecrest earthquake, one thing you shouldn’t do is run to the nearest entrance when you feel the vibration. This is a myth.

But you have to sit under a table and cover your head.

You should also consider putting shoes next to your bed in case you have to navigate the broken glass in your home, and know where to find the documents you may need for disaster recovery. (Think about things like your Social Security card or birth certificate.)

Of course, the tricky part is assembling an earthquake kit.

What should be in my seismic toolkit?

According to Eve O’Neill, a writer for Wirecutter, the New York Times Company-owned product recommendations site, the key ingredient you’ll need is water, as you may be without it for weeks, and you’ll need better storage for it than a Costco platform of plastic bottles. You will also need a gas shutoff.

“For many of the Asian descent, there is a good reason why love seems anxious, especially now,” writer Celeste Ng wrote in a disturbing article to accompany this series of photos taken by Asian and Asian American photographers.

They were asked to answer the question: What does love in a time of hate look like?

For some, the response has taken the form of pictures of parents caring for them or receiving their care. Others made selfies – a kind of loving reclamation in a country where your face can mark you as a foreigner.

Ms. Ng wrote about how she saw Dorothea Lange’s picture, “Oakland, California, 1942,” showing a wontow grocery store affixed to a huge sign proclaiming “I’m American,” and thought of the shopkeeper, “Embracing America in Two Feet.”

That photo also amazed me – and gutted it – when I saw it last year while browsing the digital archive of the Oakland California Museum of Portraits of Mrs. Lange. I was writing for Labor Day Archives, and for me, the photo portrayed a shattering promise to America as a place where anyone could prove they belong to hard work and projects.

Ms. Ng wrote that she could not find what happened to the shopkeeper other than that the sign did not rescue him from prison with thousands of other Japanese Americans during WWII.

The photograph or sign will not demonstrate someone’s humanity to those bent on seeing them as others.

“But we don’t need our pictures and our stories to convince people that we are human and that we are just like them,” she wrote. “We don’t need to be exactly like them.”
