Geologist: Weak earthquakes in Ranao are nothing to worry about

Kota Kinabalu: Geologist Dr. Felix Tongkul says the two weak earthquakes that occurred two hours apart near Mount Kinabalu Sunday night (April 18th) are not a cause for concern.

“These small earthquakes are very common in this region,” he said when contacted on Monday (April 19) about general concerns that a stronger earthquake might come after the two moderate earthquakes.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department recorded the first earthquake at 11.10 pm. It measured 2.8 on the Richter scale and occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers and had its epicenter 11 kilometers from Ranau.

The second earthquake struck at 1.05 am on Monday (April 19) and measured 2.7 on the Richter scale.

It was recorded at a depth of 13 km and its center is 14 km west of Ranau.

Yasin Miki, director of Kinabalu Park, said that the climbing activities at Mount Kinabalu, in the Ranau district, were not affected by the earthquakes.

“There was no effect on the mountain and the surrounding areas. The climbing activities are continuing as usual,” he added.

Residents of Ranau did not feel the two weak tremors about 100 km from here.

Authorities, including the Fire and Rescue Services Department, said no distress calls had been received regarding the two quakes.

In 2015, a 6.1 earthquake on Mount Kinabalu killed 18 people, including students from Singapore. It also caused extensive structural damage to buildings in Ranau and surrounding areas.
