West Valley City School is moving to a new building due to earthquake damage

West Valley Valley City, Utah – When you resume traditional school lessons, West Lake Steam Junior High School in West Valley City will be transferred to the newly closed Westbrook Elementary School.

“We are very satisfied with the decisions that are being made and those that are being taken in an effort to keep children safe,” Ben Horsley, spokesman for Granite School of Schools, told FOX 13.

West Lake STEM, located at 3,450 W and 3400 S, was severely damaged in the earthquake, which measured 5.7 on March 18. Damage is being assessed to determine whether the building can be saved, or whether it will need to be completely rebuilt.

The Granite School Board voted to close Westbrook Elementary last year, but the closure did not take effect until the end of this school year. The building is located at 3451 West and 6200 South.

“This was the closest facility we could find that meets all of the criteria that may be required for young adults,” Horsley said. “However, we still have to add some ingredients.”

Adjustments will be made to the existing structure, including the addition of a standard shower and dining hall.

Safety was a major factor in the change, but another factor was keeping students together.

“It was decided that it would be better to keep them together a well-performing school,” Horsley said.
