Oman: There is no danger of a tsunami after the 5.6 magnitude earthquake

Muscat: The Oman Civil Aviation Authority said that the 5.6-magnitude earthquake that struck last night at around 10 pm does not pose a tsunami threat.

The earthquake that struck the Owen fault zone in the western Arabian Sea occurred at a depth of 28 km. The Owen Fracture Zone (OFZ), is a diversion fault line in the northwestern Indian Ocean separating the Arab and African plates from the Indian plate.

Oman is part of the Arabian plate that includes the Arabian Peninsula continent in addition to the ocean areas that consist of parts of the Red Sea, the Arabian Sea, the Gulf of Aden and the Gulf of Oman.

Along the northeastern margin, the Arabian plate is undergoing continental collision, which has resulted in the bending of the Zagros Mountains.

Last year, a series of regular earthquakes was monitored and reported by the Seismological Center at Sultan Qaboos University (EMCSQ). In December of last year, a 5.3 magnitude earthquake was reported 415 kilometers from Salalah in the Arabian Sea and before that in the same month another seismic activity was recorded 245 kilometers from Khasab in Hormuzgan in southern Iran. A series of smaller earthquakes were recorded in Khasab and Bahla between August and November 2020.

However, none of the earthquakes resulted in any casualties or structural damage.
