A magnitude 4.8 earthquake hits the Iranian province of Sarpul Zahab

According to the Seismological Center of the Institute of Geophysics of the University of Tehran, the earthquake struck at 14:39 local time on Monday and shook Sarbol-e-Zahab district in Kermanshah province.

The tremor was documented at a depth of ten kilometers shallow. So far, no injuries or damages were reported as a result of the earthquake.

Iran experiences frequent seismic activity as it sits where two major tectonic plates meet.

In November 2017, Kermanshah province was hit by a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3, killing hundreds of people.

A year later, more than 550 people were injured in a strong earthquake of 6.3 magnitude that shook the same Iranian province again.

In 2003, more than 26,000 people died in the aftermath of a major earthquake that destroyed the ancient city of Bam in eastern Iran. In 1990, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake in northern Iran killed thousands of people.
