Korea struck three minor earthquakes in two days

SEOUL, April 28 (Yonhap) – South Korea has experienced three minor earthquakes in and around the southwestern region in the past two days, the Korean Meteorological Administration (KMA) said Tuesday.

A 2.4-magnitude earthquake hit Jomsan Mountain in South Chongzhong Province, 198 km south of Seoul, shortly after noon on Monday, while Mokpo, South Jeolla port, 410 km south of the capital, recorded a 2.1-magnitude earthquake before 1 pm, according to I mentioned KMA.

Earlier in the day, a 2.8-magnitude earthquake hit Jangsu County, north of Jeolla, 318 km south of Seoul.

No human casualties or property damage were reported from the three earthquakes.

KMA officials said that the three earthquakes were not related to each other, in anticipation of any unnecessary concerns.

The Gomsan earthquake occurred at 12:06 pm, 8 km north of the mountainous province, at a depth of 10 km. The agency said the epicenter was at 36.16 degrees north latitude and 127.43 degrees east longitude. With the exception of the marine area, South Chungcheong Province was hit by an internal earthquake for the first time since October 2018, when a 2-magnitude earthquake occurred.

The Mokpo earthquake occurred after 46 minutes in the water 17 km south of the coastal city at a depth of 22 km, and its epicenter was at 34.66 degrees north latitude and 126.41 degrees east longitude. Last Friday, an island on the Yellow Sea off Mokpo reported a 2.3-magnitude earthquake.

“Jiangsu is not an earthquake-prone area, and it appears that Monday’s earthquake occurred independently by accident in the process of releasing the accumulated energy on the ground,” said an official with the authority.

“In earthquakes and neighboring areas, there have been frequent earthquakes in the past,” the official said. “Unexpected damage from the three earthquakes this week.”
